What is massage?
Massage is a "hands-on" therapy in which muscles and other soft tissues of the body are manipulated to improve health and well-being. Varieties of massage range from gentle stroking and kneading of muscles and other soft tissue to deeper manual techniques. Massage has been practiced as a healing therapy for centuries in nearly every culture around the world. It helps relieve muscle tension, reduce stress and creates deep relaxation.
How does massage work?
When a therapist massages soft tissue, electrical signals are transmitted both to the local area and throughout the body. These signals help heal damaged muscle, stimulate circulation, clear waste products via the lymphatic system, boost the activity of the immune system, reduce pain and tension, and induce a calming effect. Massage may also enhance a general sense of well-being by stimulating the release of endorphins (natural painkillers and mood elevators) and reducing levels of certain stress hormones.

The most obvious benefit shared by virtually everyone is that a full body massage makes you feel great! The stress-relieving, soothing results are enough for many to include massage as a regular part of their lives. Like exercise, massage does more for you if you engage in it regularly; even a monthly treatment can help maintain general health.
Techniques
Swedish - This is the massage that most people are familiar with. Swedish massage is generally done with the aid of oils and incorporates long, slow strokes, creating a very relaxing experience.
Deep Tissue - This massage is directed toward the deeper tissues. It helps lengthen muscles, establish structural and functional integrity and improves range-of-motion.
Trigger Point - Trigger points are highly irritable spots in the muscle. Trigger points may be caused by injury or overuse of the muscle. Locating and deactivating trigger points reduces pain and improves function.
Structural Muscular Balancing - moves the body away from pain into comfort, improves neuromuscular communication in the body, releases tension which limits body range of motion.
Chair Massage - is used on-site in offices & public places. It's a good way to release stress and gives a rejuvenating boost to energy levels.
Polarity Therapy - A form of energy healing, polarity therapy stimulates and balances the flow of energy within the body to enhance health & well-being.
Hot Stone Massage - Stone Massage utilizes approximately 85 stones in varying temperatures and sizes from warm to cool and small to large. The heat from the warm basalt stones penetrates deeply to help loosen and sooth tightened, congested muscles. The cool marble stones are used to reduce inflammation and create a balanced and rejuvenating treatment.
Prenatal - is used to nurture and relax the pregnant mother. It will help release the physical aches that come with pregnancy, such as sciatic pain, headache, back pains, leg aches.
Preparing for a Massage Therapy Session
Although techniques and styles may differ in some areas of the country, and even from one therapist to the next, here are some general guidelines to help you know what to expect from a massage session.
Intake interview: Your therapist will want some information about your medical history and areas of discomfort before your session begins. You will complete a health history form which the therapist will use as a guide to provide you with a massage suited for your individual needs and to determine any contraindications for massage.
Draping: For a full-body massage, you will be given privacy to disrobe to your level of comfort and cover up with a sheet. During your massage the therapist will undrape only the part of the body being massaged. Your modesty will be respected at all times. Feel free to ask questions that will make your massage more comfortable.
